About TSI company

The company’s story begins in 1960, when it was named Thermo-Systems Engineering Co. instead of Pentalent Engineering Company.

In 1961, the company moves from its first location in the basement of co-founder Mike Fingerson’s home to a shop on Hennepin Avenue in Minneapolis, and in 1967 to a 10,000 square foot leased space on Cleveland Avenue in Roseville, Minnesota.

In 1971, TSI begins work on a project to develop a wind speed sensor or anemometer sensitive to low winds and winds in low-density atmospheres. Of the 60 anemometers built for NASA, six went to Mars, mounted on the Viking spacecraft.

In 1976, the company takes the name TSI Incorporated and builds a 32,000 square foot building on 7.5 acres in Shoreview, Minnesota. In 1980, TSI adds another 52,000 square feet. In 1996, another 56,000 square feet is added, for a total of 140,000 square feet and over 13 acres.

In 1986. TSI acquires Handar of Sunnydale, California.

In 1987, TSI’s most successful product, the PortaCount Respirator Fit Tester, is launched. In 1993, the product is packaged for military use for the US Army and Marine Corps.

In 1988, DICKEY-john is purchased by Churchill Industries. DICKEY-john now operates as a division of TSI Incorporated.

In 1993, TSI is acquired by Transducer Research Incorporated. TSI co-founder, Chairman and CEO Dr Leroy Fingerson is elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Engineering for his work in the field of flow measurement instrumentation, including research, development, design and manufacturing.

In 1995, TSI acquires Alnor Instrument Company of Chicago, Illinois. TSI acquires Aerometrics, Inc. of Sunnyvale, California. That same year, TSI receives its first contracts to develop and manufacture aerodynamic particle measurement instruments for the U.S. and Canadian armies. These instruments detect the presence of biohazardous materials in the air.

In 1996 TSI acquires Zimmer GmbH of Rossdorf, Germany, and in 1997 Target Systems in Salt Lake City, Utah.

In 1998, TSI’s Board of Directors and co-founder Mike Fingerson holds a chair in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota. TSI acquires Amherst Process Instruments, Inc. of Amherst, Massachusetts.

In 1999, TSI acquires the assets of MESACON GmbH of Dortmund, Germany. TSI also acquires the stock, assets and operations of Environmental Systems Corp. ESC, based in Knoxville, Tennessee.

In 2005, TSI acquires instrumentation production lines owned by Airflow Developments Ltd. of High Wycombe, England. TSI acquired the instrumentation portion of ADL’s business, including manufacturing, assembly, sales and service.

In 2008, TSI opens TSI Instruments India Private Limited in Bangalore, India. In the same year, TSI acquires Adams Instruments, certain assets of Mesacon GmbH, Facility Monitoring Systems, Ltd. of Malvern, England, and SystemPlus Technology Pte Ltd. of Singapore.

In 2009, TSI acquires certain assets of Particle Metrics Incorporated from Research Electro-Optics, Inc. of Boulder, Colorado. And in 2010, TSI acquires Quant Technologies, LLC of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

In 2012. TSI acquires laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technology and product line from Photon Machines Corporation of Redmond, Washington.

In 2014. TSI acquires business assets and Raman spectroscopy technology from Enwave Optronics, Inc. of Irvine, California, and in 2016 MSP Corporation of Shoreview, Minnesota.

In 2018, TSI is being provided by Benjamin Y.H. Liu – TSI Chair of Applied Technology in Mechanical Engineering in honour of TSI alumnus Dr. Benjamin Liu. TSI’s Future Leaders in Industrial Hygiene and Safety programme is launched in partnership with the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) and the American Industrial Hygiene Foundation (AIHF). TSI purchases Quest Personal Safety Division products, including dosimeters, EVM environmental monitors, heat stress monitors and sound level meters from 3M.
